The Twittersphere and anime blogs of Japan are running wild with the rumours of a possible anime adaptation of yet another spin-off from the Muv-Luv Alternative series: Muv-Luv Schwarzesmarken. The light novel series focusing on the human military efforts on the East German front against relentless alien BETAs in an alternate timeline Cold War.
Specifically, the story is about the exploits and hard choices made by East Germany’s elite 666th TSF Squadron in the year of 1983 . Not only that, the squadron members have to face politicking by their superiors. Muv-Luv Alternative fans might recall the story being set before the massive invasion by BETA that broke the UN forces at the central European front.
The official synopsis:
“The East German Army 666th TSF Squadron “Schwarzesmarken” (Black Marks) are a special-forces unit tasked with assaulting BETA forces through unconventional tactics; specifically, they target Lux and Magnus Lux to deny the BETA the advantage of ranged firepower. Their orders are given the topmost priority, such that it is common practice for the 666th to ignore allied distress calls that will result in deviation from their original mission, even if only for a short moment.
The 666th Squadron mostly operates MiG-21s, with their squadron commander Irisdena Bernhard piloting an MiG-21PF.”
In the alternate timeline, instead of the traditional fighter jets, the humanity is manning mechas known as TSF with similar designation with the jet fighters.
Previously, Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse was adapted into an anime series back in 2012 which looked at the Imperial Japanese Empire, Soviet Union and America’s war effort against the similar enemy at the Pacific Front. Muv-Luv Alternative’s story is famous for its grim, bleak and heartbreaking with sprinkles of pathos since many characters often got killed in quite gruesome fashion because the BETAs will literally consume human beings alive. This is compounded when nations are still plotting against each other despite facing an overwhelming enemy.
Currently seven light novels have been published for Schwarzesmarken plus few short story anthologies, TSF Cross Operation Schwarzesmarken & TSFIA Volume 5. Many pundits are expecting the anime announcement to be made in the new issue of Tech Gian magazine on 21 May 2015. This particular magazine has been serializing the stories based on the Muv-Luv Alternative universe for quite some time.
