Scribblenauts developer 5th Cell has just laid off staff following Warner Bros. cancellation of Scribblenauts: Fighting Words.
5th Cell came about in 2003 with a main focus on mobile games. Their big break came with Scribblenauts in 2009 on the Nintendo DS, published by Warner Bros. The franchise has since then spawned plenty of sequels and ports on Nintendo’s handheld platforms, mobile devices and even PC.
Here’s the full statement from 5th Cell on today’s layoffs, as told to Polygon:
Unfortunately, due to a project cancellation, we have had to let go of 45 of our very talented staff members today.
Layoffs aren’t something we take lightly and we’d like to thank all our employees for all the hard work and dedication over the years.
5TH Cell as a company is not closing down, but our focus right now is 100% on helping our staff make the transition to other external opportunities. If we haven’t already reached out, any interested employer can reach us at jobs@5thcell.com.
Certainly not a good sign of the times.
