For any TV geek, the name Shonda Rhimes will definitely be familiar. The mega tv producer of popular series like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder is a staple name in the TV-land. And now, Netflix has gotten their hands on her and her production company Shondaland.
Now Shonda Rhimes and her production company will be producing new shows exclusively for Netflix, ending her 15-year relationship with ABC Studios.
That’s not to say that the existing Shondaland shows are going to be axed. Panicking fans can keep calm as Rhimes has reiterated that current Shondaland show, which include Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away With Murder, For the People, and a planned Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, “will continue to thrive on ABC.”
No details on what shows will be produced at the moment though we’re sure Netflix will eventually announce them in due time. Shonda Rhimes and her Shondaland production company will still be with ABC until June 2018 so whatever plans and shows that will be produced by her will likely be announced during that period.
One added bonus to Rhime’s move to Netflix is that now, she will not be beholden to the standards that are usually set for regular TV-networks. This includes the use of profanity and nudity in her shows, so we might possibly be seeing Shondaland shows that’ll push the envelope a bit more than usual.
This announcement comes not too long after a whirlwind of activity that involved the Netflix. This includes Disney ending its content providing deal with Netflix and the latter purchasing Millarworld, the comic publisher of Kingsman and Kick-Ass.
It’s going to be an interesting time to be a Netflix subscriber now that they’re upping their content offerings even further. With their move into anime, and comic book content, they’ve made an impact on the niche content category. And now, after signing Shonda Rhimes, they’re bound to dominate the general viewership even more.
