Sony Pictures Television set to acquire Funimation, whose catalogue of shows include popular classics and series like Dragon Ball Z, Cowboy Bebop, One Piece, My Hero Academia and Attack on Titan.
The deal values Funimation at about $150 million, and Sony will acquire a 95% majority stake in the American anime distributor.
As of now, the Texas based Funimation adapts, licenses and distributes anime content from Japan, and they have the rights to over 450 brands with more than 10,000 hours of content. They’re also responsible for providing subbed and dubbed anime across many channels and platforms.
The deal will also affect Sony Pictures Television Network’s Animax network in 23 countries inclusive of Japan, so this might mean we will have even more shows in the future? hopefully!
