The standalone Venom movie is still in the works, despite The Amazing Spider-Man franchise being a little long in the tooth. Now that it’s moving forward, there’s plans to release the movie next year.

As for the movie, Alex Kurtzman (The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Mummy reboot) will be directing Venom, with Dante Harper (Edge of Tomorrow) writing the script, with the movie set to be “a franchise apart from and unrelated to the upcoming Spider-Man movie in the works with actor Tom Holland”. This also means that the movie won’t be connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in any way, and will be a standalone franchise.

For those unacquainted with the symbiont, Venom often acts as an antagonist in the Spider-verse, and has roughly the same abilities as Spidey himself, albeit a bit different. However, they’re more of a vigilante as opposed to a hard and fast good guy/bad guy type character, so it’ll be interesting to see what angle they’ll be taking for the solo film.

Venom will be out 5 October 2018 if all goes well.
