You can now load up your Steam Wallet using bitcoins; as Steam has apparently partnered up with Bitpay to make the cryptocurrency a legit payment option.

If you’re not familiar with bitcoins, its basically a digital currency generated by lending computing power (called mining) in exchange for the coins, which in turn can be exchanged for currencies, products and services with their respective providers.

The main reason however, seems to be Valve wanting alternate payment methods available for emerging markets like Brazil, China and India; where credit card access is limited. However, the rigs needed to run bitcoin mining operations tend to need quite a bit of power so we don’t expect that many people to have bitcoins ready at their disposal to begin with.

Bitpay is looking to work with more gaming platforms (GOG maybe?) so we might see them reach out to others in the future.
