As this year’s national day draws closer, the nation has been a troubled one. In the latest bit of weirdness to come about this week, is an email sent from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Comission (MCMC) forbidding the use of the word “MERDEKA” and the number 58 on national day materials. This includes further omitting the word and the number from campaigns and ads; as the email is addressed to brands and media.
The actual email can be read below:
As far fetched as it appears, the email is definitely legit, as investigated by CILISOS. We don’t quite know what has prompted this very sudden move from the government but it sure is an unsettling one. There is a possibility the move is in regards to be more sensitive towards Sabah and Sarawak, as they have a different independence day than the rest of the nation.
But we still feel something is amiss considering this is still very sudden, but we can only cross our fingers that the reason isn’t particularly bad one.
