Godzilla Resurgence

TOHO‘s Shin Godzilla film will be named Godzilla Resurgence for western markets, with them releasing promo materials for the film earlier this week.

The new film has apparently been in the works for awhile, and its title isn’t really pointing at a revival or rebirth of the series but rather a new take on good ol’ Godzilla. But then again knowing the Japanese language it could point to a number of things, so we rather not speculate.

Godzilla Resurgence will have Akihiro Yamauchi (Trick, Bakuman, Densha Otoko) as executive producer and special effects coordinator and Hideaki Anno as chief director and writer. Shinji Jiguchi (Attack on Titan) is also collaborating on the film.

Actors will be Hiroki Hasegawa (Attack on Titan, Princess Jellyfish) as a person linked to the Japanese government when Godzilla attacks, Yutaka Takenouchi (Calmi Cuori Appassionati, Hoshi no Kinka) will play a similarly linked goverment person while Satomi Ishihara (Attack on Titan, Pokemon the Movie: Black) will portray an American agent.

Filming began in August and recently wrapped up last month. The new Godzilla will be the tallest one yet, taller than the 108 meter tall monstrosity that was in the 2014 Hollywood film. Godzilla Resurgence will be mainly set in modern Japan but there will be some involvement in the States; with Higuchi claiming that this will be the scariest Godzilla movie yet.

There is also another bunch of Godzilla movies in the works in Hollywood, with the films set to come out over the next three years.

Shin Godzilla/Godzilla Resurgence will hit cinemas in Japan next summer.
