VR gaming isn’t exactly the “future” anymore but fans of Sword Art Online listen in, your favourite thing is going to be part of a real virtual reality MMORPG to be tested this March.
Update: As it turns out, something got lost in translation with the announcement and this Sword Art Online VR game isn’t going to be an MMO but is rather a 20 minute VR experience. Sorry guys!
Yes, you heard us right. Sword Art Online is literally going to be the world’s first VR MMORPG. The game will be tested in Tokyo (in a secret location of course) from 18 to 20 March; and only 208 selected applicants will be partaking in the test.
Sword Art Online: The Beginning is a test by tech giant IBM, and will be running a cognitive system known as IBM Watson. The system “uses natural language processing and machine learning to reveal insights from large amounts of unstructured data” and will be running alongside SoftLayer, IBM’s cloud computing subsidiary which will be hosting the world.
The project is already looking pretty massive (and we hardly know much about it) but hopefully it will become a full-fledged project and not just a test of IBM’s infrastructure.
