2. Star Trek (2009)
After years of rumours of a reboot with a young Kirk, Spock and McCoy, usually involving Starfleet Acadamy, J.J. Abrams, a self declared Star Wars fan-boy, took over the reins and masterfully rebooted the Star Trek universe. By using time travel to create a new, alternate continuity Abrams gave himself and those who followed the freedom to create brave new stories with the old characters, while keeping the old continuity (and fan base) intact, even if it is wrapped up in an alternate timeline.
In this new vision Kirk is scrappier, Spock more sullen and the relationships than we all know and love are only developing. Eric Bana’s Nero was a lacklustre villain but Chris Pine’s Kirk retains the swagger of a young Shatner without veering into an impersonation and seeing the baton passed from Leonard Nimoy’s Spock to Zachary Quinto’s was pure joy. “Nu Trek” was also fun enough that any missteps could be overlooked, such as using a beer factory for the engine room set, the Enterprise leaving pixie dust in space after going to warp and Abrams annoying habit of putting The Beastie Boys in everything he does. A solid foundation for a new series.
