4. Star Trek Nemesis (2002)
Many would place Nemesis closer to the top of the “worst list”, signalling as it did the end of The Next Generation era but at least it tried to reverse the mistakes of the past. Prominently featuring a well known classic villain (the Romulans) with a threat tied directly to the Captain’s past (a young Tom Hardy as Shinzon, Captain Picard’s rubber nosed clone) and an understandable threat, (Shinzon’s going to wipe out all life on planet Earth), all were improvements over Insurrection.
It was too little, too late, however, as an ageing crew, the sudden reinvention of Picard as a joyrider and the introduction of yet another Soong Android so that the filmmakers could kill off Data while still leaving the door open for further appearances by Brent Spiner, failed to charm audiences.
The introduction of the previously unknown Remans, sister race to the Romulans, themselves distant cousins to the Vulcans perplexed long time fans and the intensely annoying B-4 android drove away any potential new fans who accidentally wandered into the cinema.
An ignominious end for a crew that had reintroduced ‘Trek to a whole new generation of fans.
