Brought to life by Malaysia’s own SwinDesign studio from the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak; Tou: The Sacrifice is a horror exploration game inspired by the Melanau tribe.
Originally starting out as a final year project, the game became a success after the game won as the Malaysian champion in two out of three categories in the Microsoft Imagine Cup world semi-finals. So far the game has been downloaded over 5000 times since it’s initial debut a few weeks after launch on Microsoft’s platforms.
Aside from being a hit with American audiences, the game is also pretty popular in China too, based on the number of downloads.
Stella Wang, Lead Artist Assets Designer of SwinDesign, who is also one of the member of Sarawak’s native Melanau tribe said, “We created the game to educate the local youngsters about the distinctive culture and rituals of Melanau Tribe. Now we get to share the experience with the world.”
The game basically is a horror exploration game that is inspired by the Melanau tribes of Sarawak, in both 2D and 3D. You play the role of a father who ventures into a forest near a cursed Melanau village with his daughter Alice. Like all games that involve small children and forests, Alice gets kidnapped and you have to hunt down the spirit that took her by following the trails of the spirit.
The game currently has two chapters available and you play by navigating the map with your mobile to search for clues and solve puzzles. You navigate the map in 2D Parallax most of the time but you can experience 3D environments with your phone’s gyroscope. Perhaps this means we will be able to play it on the Oculus sometime?
So far its looking pretty promising, so lets hope that its transition to mobile works out!
Tou: The Sacrifice is free for Windows devices.
