If there’s one thing Uniqlo has always been good at, it’s marrying pop and gaming culture with their T-shirts. And in conjunction with Nintendo’s 25th anniversary this year, the Japanese clothing retailer has unveiled its new Nintendo UT collection of T-shirts.
The new Nintendo collection consists of 25 winning designs from its Nintendo-themed Uniqlo T-shirt (UT) Grand Prix 2017 competition. The competition, which originally began in 2005, allows anyone regardless of age, gender or nationality to participate, and this year welcomed over 16,000 entries.
Participants created original T-shirt designs inspired by Nintendo’s iconic games and legendary characters, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Animal Crossing, Star Fox, Kirby, Splatoon, and the Pokémon series.
For this year’s theme, the winning design featured a Mario motif and was designed by Takashi Kawazoe from Japan.
The Second place design featured a Splatoon designed which was the creation of another Japanese designer, Shino Yamazaki.
For third place, the design had a Zelda theme and is the design of David Ricardo Flores Gomez, who also happens to be the first Mexican to be placed in any of the Uniqlo T-Shirt Grand Prix.
The new collection will be launched mid-May with options for men, women and kids. There will be a total of 31 designs, with 15 of them for men and eight each for women and children. As for the availability in the South East Asia region, they’re as follows:
