NBC has just ordered the first season of Powerless, a superhero office comedy in which none of the main characters are superheroes. Set at “one of the worst insurance companies in America”, this take on the genre seems like it has legs. And a cape.

Based on the style of shows like The Office, Powerless follows Vanessa Hudgen’s character as she becomes a workplace celebrity “after standing up to a [superhero who] messes with her commute.” but is still focused on normal, everyday working life for someone with no powers at all but still has the capacity to be a hero.

Alan Tudyk (Firefly, every Disney film in the last few years) plays Vanessa’s boss, a power-mad dictator who seems like he could be an easy stand in for a villain – given how often Alan’s played the bad guy, this doesn’t seem like a stretch.

Rounding out the cast are the very funny Danny Pudi (Community) and Christina Kirk (A to Z, Manhattan). While it’s not immediately clear whether DC comics giants like Supes or Batman will appear on the show, although it’s easy to expect that Powerless will feature a rotating cast of the smaller names in the universe.
