Umm…yeah, Hasbro is pushing out yet another boardgame to be converted into a movie after the “success” of Battleship (2012). Monopoly, the old boardgame about real estate and going to jail for no reason is their current target.
Few years ago, Ridley Scott was attached to the project but it did not take off since the director wanted to make a real estate market satire. However, Hasbro wanted it to be a vanilla, family friendly movie. It is envisioned as a family adventure movie, something like Goonies. In fact it is reported that the company using it as the template for the Monopoly movie.
Now Lionsgate and Hasbro has agreed to work together to realize the movie and they have just roped in Academy Award winner writer/director Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show, Gattaca). We are not sure if he will be sitting on the director’s chair though. Not only that, Lionsgate already furnished an official synopsis here:
“In keeping with a game that has brought so many hours of joy to so many for so long, Monopoly will be a film for all ages, visually sumptuous, heartwarming, and full of action and adventure. The story centers on a boy from Baltic Avenue who uses both Chance and Community in a quest to make his fortune, taking him on a fun, adventure-filled journey. It’s about making your own luck, what makes you truly rich and, of course, avoiding Jail time!”
Producer Randall Emmett (2 Guns) hinted that the movie’s plot will focus on a treasure map and the hunt for it. He also claimed that the movie production will start in the middle of 2015 but otherwise, nothing solid on that.
So far, no casting or release date is known yet.
