We have gotten word that the Pacfic Rim sequel has just put on indefinite hold, according to Hollywood Reporter.
Due to complicated studio economics and politics, Legendary Pictures has been forced to put a halt to the production despite the original plans to release it on August 2017, serving as a direct sequel to 2013 kaiju/superobot movie. The report states the production halt could mean delay in the release, “if it gets to made at all”.
The box office performance of Pacific Rim was not all that impressive, Boxoffice Mojo detailed a low performing domestic (USA) collection of US$100 million in contrast of its production cost of US$190 million. However, the international performance (particularly China) helped it to make profit of US$411 million which led to the previously greenlit sequel.
This is not first time del Toro has had to face the disappointment of cancellation – Konami puts a stop sign to his Silent Hill collaboration with game maestro Hideo Kojima in April this year. At least in this case, the director and Kojima “are still in touch” and still plan to come up with something in future.
The director’s latest movie, Crimson Peak is set to be out at the cinemas on 16 October 2015.
