According to Film Divider, Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad and Godzilla (despite being shortchanged in appearance) “had words” with the studio to be the next villain in the upcoming Star Trek 3. Justin Lin of Fast & Furious fame is the new director since J.J. Abrams is busy with Star Wars: Force Awakens. If the rumour is true, then hopefully Mr Cranston will have more screentime compared to what he has in last year’s kaiju movie Godzilla.
Additionally, there are claims that three major female characters will make their debut in the new movie after a storm of criticism that the rebooted Star Trek movies are overly male dominated. Not to mention the rather awkward scene of Carol Marcus stripping down to her underwear and Captain Kirk is just standing there, was a little bit too much. The three female characters are a Federation starship skipper, the President of the United Federation of Planets and ex-wife of Dr Bones.
The filming is scheduled to kick off at Vancouver Film Studios on 15 April 2015 despite the early rumours of a possible location shoot in South Korea that seems to be unsubstantiated as for now. Actor Simon Pegg who’s playing as the engineer in the rebooted series will be the scriptwriter of the new movie. When Karl Urban was asked about the movie, he teasingly said this: “phenomenal”.
Star Trek 3 opens in U.S. theaters on 8 July 2016.
