The series is written by an ex-JSDF officer and after his discharge from the service, he posted the novel on a website called Arcadia from 2006 to 2009. Taken up by publisher AlphaPolis, the printed edition starts to appear in 2010. The novel finally ends in volume 5 but the spin-off series is still going strong with 4th volume just published last year December.

The official synopsis:

In the year 20XX, “Gate,” a portal to a parallel world suddenly appears in Ginza, Tokyo, then the army and monsters from the world are pouring out of the portal. After successfully beating them down, the Japanese Ground-Self Defense Forces goes exploring the other side of the portal, named “Tokuchi” (special place). By saving the villagers from a giant fire dragon, 1st lieutenant Yoji Itami, who is a 33-year-old deep otaku and in charge of the 3rd scouting party, starts having close relationships with a bishoujo elf, sorcerer, and sub-god from the different world.

The premise is very interesting since it is rare to see major depictions of modern Japanese military in anime settings like this. This should satisfy military and fantasy otakus at the same time plus it would seem that the romance is pretty standard harem here. Should be one of the major crowd pleaser for the summer season.
