Few months ago, Simon Pegg said the new title for the third Star Trek movie is Star Trek Beyond but it is unconfirmed by the studio at that time. Now it is official, as director Justin Lin confirmed it beyond doubt with his first official image reveal of the film via Twitter:

The photo shows the new Starfleet patch on a jacket. The cool looking patch itself seems like it is made of suede.

The filming is kicking into the high gear after a series of troubling developments like a major rewrite of the script when Paramount felt the original draft was too “Star-Trekky”. Not only that, the original director Roberto Orci (co-writer for the first two Star Trek films) left the project due to “creative differences”. That’s how Fast & Furious director Justin Lin got his chance to direct a Star Trek flick. Co-writer Simon Pegg promises a Trek movie that is back to its original roots – a real sense of adventure. How they are going to achieve this on the other hand is debatable because “too Star-Trekky” for a Star Trek movie doesn’t seem quite right.

To recap, old crew members like Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and John Cho are back to reprise their roles with newcomers Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, Thor) and Sofia Boatella (the assassin female fatale with gazelle legs in Kingsman: Secret Service).

The movie will warp to the nearest cinema on 8 July 2016.
