Steven Spielberg is set to adapt the virtual gaming epic Ready Player One with tentative plans to play it at the cinemas come 15 December 2017.

The story is based on a 2011 novel by Ernest Cline which talks about the USA becoming a huge wasteland in 2044. For the inhabitants who don’t want to deal with the grim reality around them, they tap into a virtual reality simulated world called OASIS that is tailored to geek nostalgia of the 70’s and 80’s.

The narrative zooms on Parzival, an avatar operated by a high schooler who is on a quest to find out who is controlling the digital world. This is when one of the most powerful and wealthy men, James Halliday who invented OASIS passed away. All the money and power that he used to have will be given to anyone who successfully unravels the clues he left behind. The clues are based on the late mogul’s favourite classic arcade games, TV shows and music. So it triggers a massive hunt and one of the ruthless corporations known as IOI is in the race. If they succeed, they will impose heavy fees on anyone who want to access the OASIS.

The intellectual property scope is huge – Who’s Framing Roger Rabbit, Atari, D&D and Star Wars are just few examples. Imagine a movie that showing all of these in one go.Warner Bros. is set to work with Spielberg, their partnership had produced some of the best movies in cinema history such as Empire of the Sun, The Color Purple and A.I. Artificial Intelligence.
