gamera 50th anniversary

New York Comic Con saw some brand new Gamera footage earlier this week, and it features the titular monster in stunning CGI.

Directed by Katsuhito Ishii (Kill Bill Chapter 3, Redline) and produced by Shinichiro Inoue and Tsuyoshi Kikuchi, the video shown is a short version of the “Gamera 50th Anniversary Special Video” that will premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival.

This was after rumours were confirmed last year that there was in fact a new flick featuring the giant turtle in the making, though not a full blown one.

This is great considering the kaiju genre is experiencing a steady revival, thanks to movies like Godzilla and Pacific Rim (and maybe Attack on Titan, if you count that it was done by Toho). Kankurō Kudō and Rui Takahashi play the father and son, respectively, who appear in the video.

The last time the mutant turtle beast made his appearance was in 2006, in Chiisaki Yūsha-tachi ~Gamera~ (Gamera the Brave) and his first appearance dates all the way back to Daiei’s 1965 film Daikaijū Gamera (Gamera the Giant Monster)

The festival is set to run 22 to 21 October this year, where the festival will be screening four digitally restored Gamera films, some of which have received 4K restorations for the big screen. Hopefully they will make the whole short film available to the public once it gets its debut, we would like to see it too!
