Shonen Sunday, the Shogakukan manga magazine that is hosting famous series like Magi, Detective Conan, Hayate the Combat Butler, RINNE and Silver Spoon will be overhauled and some famous series might be dropped in order to revitalize the magazine.

The new editor-in-chief, Takenori Ichihara (appointed in July this year) wrote a long letter explaining why this shake up is happening. He is aiming to bring in new talents with new series and combine them with the veterans together to create a broader appeal to the audience. The magazine also plans to have more one shots to explore new ideas, directions and concepts too. To give some perspective on this matter, on the economic side of things, it did not look too good for the magazine – a steady decline of circulation from 890,000 copies back in 2008 to the projected 390,000 copies for this year. That is a 50 percent loss in space of seven years, a big blow to the manga magazine that has been around since 1959.

The editor is trying to balance the successful old series with new innovative series, he is confident that they will be able to push back the magazine back to prominence. He is also promising big things for the direction of the magazine.

Time will tell.
