Without a good villain, any story will fall flat on its face if the hero doesn’t have his conflict. Be it a villain that look like they crawled out of hell or be as normal looking as me and you, Japanese fans have voted in the characters they consider as the Top 10 most despicable villains in anime.
The survey was conducted by MyNavi Student and here are the results, in no particular order:
Frieza (Dragon Ball Z) This galactic emperor has no problems with killing off both his subordinates and enemies, with the alien habitually blowing up planets just to get what he wants.
Colonel Muska (Castle in the Sky) this antagonist from Studio Ghibli‘s classic stages a coup to reclaim the Laputan throne to restart Sheeta’s family’s lineage whether she likes it or not. In the english dub he is voiced by Mark Hamill, who is known for his iconic rendition of the Joker from the Batman animated series.
Lepka (Conan, the Boy in the Future) A wannabe dictator like Muska, Lepka is only interested in world domination. He works against Dr. Lao to learn the secrets of solar power to fuel his weapons of mass destruction.
Kyubey (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) the unassuming looking incubator grants the wishes of young girls and gives them magical powers to defeat the witches feeding on people. The whole thing is actually part of a ruse to collect energy to “save the universe”, with witches and the puella magi actually being part of a vicious cycle of despair.
Commodore Andrew Falk (Legend of Galactic Heroes) Institutionalised after shooting Chief Admiral Kubersly, he’s sprung out for an assasination attempt against Yang Wen-li, one of the protagonists.
Gin (Detective Conan) The man responsible for Shinichi Kudo’s reversion to a young boy, Gin works for the mysterious Black Organization. He oversees most of the mafia group’s missions and handles the occasional assassination or five.
Black Ghost (Cyborg 009) More of an organization rather than a singular entity, this terrorist outfit is headed by Skull and their aim is to start the next World War using advanced tech.
Gauna (Knights of Sidonia) This regenerating alien shape-shifting entity whose goal is to absorb and consume all life on Earth. The entity’s invasion eventually caused the entire planet to split and ultimately be destroyed.
Marshall D. Teach (One Piece) Also going by the moniker of Blackbeard, he split from the Whitebeard pirates after murdering Thatch for a Devil Fruit. He’s power hungry and recruits the most promising prisoners from Impel Down for his crew; by ordering the prisoners to kill each other and only picking up the ones that are left.
Dio Brando (JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure) Even before getting his vampire powers, Dio was quite the troublemaker. He immolated Jonathan Joestar’s dog, stole a kiss from his girlfriend and poisoned his adoptive father. Then he stole a body and stitched a guy’s head onto a dog for kicks. Yeeg.
