Tomb Raider is set to make a comeback to the silver screen and this time around, Alicia Vikander will take on the role of the daredevil archaeologist, Lara Croft.Vikander will continue the legacy of Lara Croft from Angelina Jolie, who last took on the role in Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life, 13-years ago.
Although new to Hollywood the young starlet has appeared in a number of well-known films such as Ex Machina and the Man from U.N.C.L.E. Vikander also won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Danish Girl.
For the latest instalment of the franchise, the film will follow a young and untested Lara Croft on her first adventure. Roar Uthaug of The Wave‘s fame has been appointed to direct MGM’s reboot of Tomb Raider and it will be produced by Graham King.
The upcoming reboot takes inspiration from the 2013 Tomb Raider video game; it will follow Lara Croft just as she starts her adventures as an archaeologist, hunting for priceless relics and artefacts all over the world.
Uthaug explained that Vikander’s character would differ from Jolie due to the levels of experience of the character. The new Lara Croft will not be taking on challenges with the same cool-handed ease, instead there it will be more of a struggle for the young archaeologist. For the movie, the director wants Lara Croft to feel like a real human being.
The reboot would be the latest cinematic adaptation of the hit video game series, Tomb Raider by Eidos Interactive. The media franchise for the series expands over 18 video games across a variety of platforms, fifty comic books, four novels and two films released.
The Tomb Raider reboot is rumoured to out in cinemas on October 6, 2017, stay tuned for the latest development of the film.
