Ubisoft’s live-action adaptation of the Assassin’s Creed franchise has finally gotten its first trailer out. With Michael Fassbender as the main character, will this be a proper video game to movie adaptation?

From what we’ve seen so far, it does have some promise. The movie is set in both Spain during the Inquisition and our present. Fassbender plays both the Inquisition era Assassin as well as his modern-day descendant.

Rounding out the cast are Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), Jeremy Irons (Batman vs Superman, Die Hard 3), and Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow, Harry Potter), all actors with serious chops and a history of throwing themselves into their roles.

Acting has never been the weak point of adaptation films though. While details are light regarding such things as plot, the trailer does take care to show off aspects the games are famous for – sweeping historical vistas, the series’ famed wristblades, acrobatic hand-to-hand combat, rooftop chases, and even the famous leaps of faith where characters jump off very tall buildings as a method of fast-paced transportation.

Assassin’s Creed is being helmed by Justin Kurzel, whose most recent outing was the 2015 adaptation of Macbeth. That film also starred Fassbender and Cotillard and was relatively well-received – although it remains to be seen whether Assassin’s Creed will be a Tomb Raider, a Spirits Within or a Pixels.
