Looks like Malaysia, or rather Malaysia’s Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is not amused with Fight of Gods, a recently released fighting game for the PC that pits various deities and gods against each other.
The MCMC wants the platform provider of the game, which is basically Steam, to disable the download for Malaysian users within 24 hours. If it isn’t disabled within the time given, further action will be taken, though what the action is, was not elaborated on.
“It is in the public interest to ensure that immediate steps are taken so that such contents do not continue to harm others,” said Malaysian’s Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak.
Fight of Gods is a fighting game developed by a Taiwanese gaming studio that features various leaders and deities of various religions fighting each other Street Fighter style. It has the likes of Jesus Christ and Gautama Buddha as fight characters, which we can see why it would irk the authorities or multi-religious, multi-cultural Malaysia.
That being said, Malaysia does have a law that forbids the creating and spreading offensive content and it is under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Considering the theme of Fight of Gods, it’s no surprise that the game has come afoul of the act.
“Malaysians respect all cultural and religious sensitivities, and the sale and distribution of the religiously insensitive and blasphemous game must be stopped immediately,” Salleh said.
