James Cameron just announced that his original plan to release the sequel to multi-billion dollar blockbuster Avatar in 2016 is “too ambitious”. He also said that the writing process has proven to be “very involved” too, in regards to building the next movie.
“There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand-alone film,” he said in Wellington, New Zealand. Avatar (2009) was originally shot in New Zealand. It is known that Cameron also originally planned to complete the scripts for three movies this month as he is leading the writing team.
“We’re writing three simultaneously. And we’ve done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We’re not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that,” he said. “And parallel with that, we’re doing all the design. So we’ve designed all the creatures and the environments.”
He felt that it is important to link the trio so the audience won’t be left hanging after the ending in the first movie, hence the extra attention to the scripting. Hopefully with the extra care given to the script, the long wait for the trilogy will be justified.
