Horror games are a dime a dozen now, some relying directly on gore factor while others deploy jumpscare after jumpscare to keep you on the edge of your seat. Rarely a rather unique one comes along (that’s what we said about Slender, but look at it now) but this time we are using it rather loosely for Tangiers, a dark stealth game that is surreal as it is weird.
The game had a Kickstarter campaign two years ago but didn’t make it, but now they’re set with an even more polished game as a 26 November release date.
Set in a parody of “1970s concrete Britain” you’re expected to move through a dark and surreal landscape where the levels alter themselves based on your playstyle and you’re armed with bits of spoken enemy dialogue you snap out from the sky. Here you will play as a rather odd being whose sole goal is to kill five specific creatures which you track down as you progress.
As described by designer Alex Harvey:
“One area revolves around some docks, featuring the obligatory lighthouse,” “Careless play will cause the lighthouse to be embedded in the architecture of a future level (levels can be completed in any order). Now, depending on the magnitude of your interaction in the docks (did you go around back stabbing and killing everyone?) the lighthouse will appear at harsher angles – its rotating light going on to illuminate not just the rooftops, but to illuminating the streets you’re trying to infiltrate through, providing an additional hazard to avoid.”
That basically means that pieces of past levels can glue themselves to other regions in the world to make things more challenging. Also, your own weapons are literally the words of your foes, as words spoken by creatures inhabiting this realm turn into physical objects. Pick up the disgruntled words of a guard trying to find you and use them to other means.
The Kickstarter has since ended but we have very high hopes for the finished game once it comes out. In the meantime, check out the trailer below.
