The production team behind the project of Blade Runner‘s sequel announced who will be their main camera guy and it is a pretty big name – Academy Award nominated (eleven times!) cinematographer Roger Deakins. He will be behind the cameras under the direction of Denis Villeneuve which makes it third time that they’re working together after movies like Prisoners and Sicario (premiering at Cannes right now).
The question is will he able to match up to the legendary legacy left by the original Blade Runner cinematographer, Jordan Cronenweth who is credited with imbuing the melancholy atmosphere and look that is still inspiring generations of sci-fi filmmakers till today. Well, let’s take a look here.
Deakins is considered as the best in his business today, his credits is certainly awe inspiring. Movies like Skyfall, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Shawshank Redemption, Dead Man Walking. Not forgetting his gig with the Coen brothers for movies like like Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy, O Brother, Where Art Thou and many more. Another highly praised work is his work with Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken. For a complete list of his work, you can check out his IMDB page. This should appease and convince even the most hardcore cynic that the movie sequel is serious business.
Many commented that Deakins is a forward-thinking innovator, adopting digital colour timing before anyone else did and transitioned into digital cameras without compromising beauty or image quality.
The sequel will start filming in summer 2016.
