3. Mystical Spider-Man loses an eye and more
Spidey’s second entry on our list isn’t the time he made a deal with the devil to erase his marriage, in return for the life of his Aunt May nor there many mutations he’s undergone over the years. No, this entry is all about the spider that bit Peter Parker in the first place. In the 2001 Totem storyline another man with spider powers, Ezekiel revealed that the accident that granted Peter his powers might not have been an accident after all. That the spider actually wanted to give Peter powers, as part of some animal totem before dying due to radiation exposure. This was tied into more mystical story lines that tried to explain all the animal themed villains that Spider-man faced as well as introduce new villain Morlun, who wanted to kill Peter and “consume his spider totem. Morlun almost succeeded, plucking out one of Spider-man’s eye’s and killing him, although, Peter did eventually get better. Needless to say, once this story arc ended it’s not really been mentioned since.
