Recently, the premier fansite of Samsung, SamMobile claimed to have some information of the upcoming Samsung flagship smartphone – the Samsung GALAXY S6.
Before you scream “another flagship so soon?” do take the rumours with a pinch of salt. However, the site has been reliable in providing accurate information about future Samsung models in the past.
Firstly, this latest effort from Sammy was developed from the ground up hence the codename “Project Zero”. It will be the first 64-bit Android phone for Samsung, and possibly even the world’s first to take advantage of Lollipop’s 64-bit capability.Display-wise it will be a Quad HD (2560×1440) and the camera sensor is rumoured to be the IMX240 (same as Galaxy Note 4). The site insists that Samsung is still deliberating between a 16MP or 20MP camera right now. Front shooter will be a 5MP, an upgrade from previous GALAXY models.
Samsung will also preparing 32GB, 64GB and 128GB variants for storage while the processor comes in the shape of brand new Exynos 7420. This CPU is full 64-bit with four Cortex-A53 and four Cortex-A57 cores. The model might also use the Snapdragon 810, the first premium 64-bit chip from Qualcomm. RAM will be standard 3GB type, nothing new here.
The rumour mill also talks about an in-house developed LTE modem called the Exynos Modem 333, which might replace the Intel modem that has been used for Exynos 5430/5433 models. It represents a major shift for Samsung to move away from the Snapdragon stable of chips if this is true. The S6 might also use the new Broadcom BCM4773 chip that combines GPS and other sensors in one package which allows for reduction of battery usage.
Another rumour is Samsung plans to include next generation NAND storage called UFS 2.0 (Universal Flash Storage). Capable of data transfer rates of up to 1.2GB/s, as compared to current eMMC 5.0 memory that maxes out at 400MB/s.What’s more, UFS costs about the same as eMMC and draws less power too. So less boot time, app startup time, longer usage and better responsiveness.
However, it is known that Xiaomi is also looking into this technology, making 2015 an interesting year for smartphones.
