In Japan, there is a manga based on the real life exploits of tech titans. Not Japanese, but a pair of Americans – Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, founders of Apple. The manga is titled Steves by mangaka Hatsuichi Matsunaga, serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior anthology with 2 tankubon volumes already out. The manga series is featured twice a month since last year.
The manga is produced by Ume, a two-person team consisting of writer Takahiro Ozawa and artist Asako Seo. The early chapters are typical shonen in the storytelling approach, the duo have a humble start in a garage workshop and are often dismissed by big players in the industry as an upstart. Not only that, the heroic and charismatic duo starts to gather like-minded friends and allies with the support of a spunky little sister while climbing to the top of Silicon Valley. During their journey, their conviction and determination wins over non-believers and enemies before they can attain their own destiny.
Sounds familiar?
Famous Apple personalities like Mike Markkula, Randy Wigginton, Chris Espinosa, Dan Kottke, Jerry Manock, Rod Holt, and Jobs’ younger sister Patty are featured in the manga too (yes, she keep calling him “baka onichan” in the manga). And of course, in every shonen manga, the hero will have an equally skilled awesome nemesis and in Steves, who else can it be?

Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft who is depicted as a brilliant, suave and smug man with a predatory stare in the manga.
Now, what is there not to love about this manga? Can you imagine an anime adaptation of this? Certainly more entertaining than the Steve Jobs movie.
