Bionic limbs are no longer a thing of science fiction as advances in robotics have made it possible for people to replace missing limbs with mechanical counterparts. One such Malaysian is on her way to getting her own high-tech prosthetic limb and she needs our help to make it happen.
Artificial limbs certainly aren’t a new thing, with newer advancements in robotics and 3D printing hitting the news every so often. But such limbs are expensive and are time consuming to develop; which is where Give A Hand comes in.
Enter David Drummond and Dr. Hong, the brains behind Give A Hand. The duo spearheads the non-profit organisation with aims to provide affordable limbs using open-source material and 3D printing to make a difference in people’s lives.
The first person they aim to outfit with a bionic hand is none other than Malaysian Ei Chi, who will also be the very first to receive “BOB” as the limb as been named. You can check it out in the video below!
Ei Chi is a 26 year old professional motion graphic designer who was born with an incomplete left hand; and has managed all her life without said appendage because prosthesis were just inaccessible due to costs. But she was generally content with life until she injured her right wrist and was completely unable to do anything for an entire week, where the disadvantages of her predicament finally hit her.
In order for Ei Chi to get fitted for her new limb, she needs to travel to New Zealand and is need of er, a hand. As such they’ve put together a donation fund to help get her there and help fund the final development of said limb. They are aiming for roughly $20,000 in an open goal (which they’ve collected $1815 at the time of writing), with any additional funds to be donated to Give A Hand to help more people who need the prosthesis, which will be given out for free.
