The Wider Universe
Marvel’s on screen (not just “cinematic”) universe is growing steadily but it’s nowhere near the breadth of the comics universe and as much as we’d like to see Jon Bernethal’s Punisher save Spider-Man, join the anti-registration side and ending up trading blows with Captain America there’s almost no chance of that with Jon Berenthal having only just assumed the role on Netflix’s Daredevil and the story complications it would add to the movie.
Similarly unless the deal between Marvel and Sony is a lot tighter than we’ve been led to believe then, we’re probably not going to see Norman Osbourne or Venom teaming up in a version of Tony Stark’s Thunderbolts, although the presence of Frank Grillo’s Crossbones and the casting of Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo could hint at some villains being redeployed as hunters by Tony’s team?
With Marvel launching more and more shows on Netflix it’s still up in the air whether we’ll see any cameos from any of the other small screen heroes, like Luke Cage or Jessica Jones but as Iron Fist is so early in development it’s incredibly unlikely he’ll turn up.
While Daredevil mighty seem like a good fit to include as a cameo he is such a success within his scope of hell’s kitchen already that opening him up to the wider world of The Avengers may close more doors than it opens for the show runners, even if he did get to call Tony “Judas” in the comics and offer him a piece of silver to go along with the taunt.
We can only hope for at least a cameo from the next Marvel character scheduled to come to the screen; Dr Steven Strange, which might help round out the cinematic universe a little more, even though he did sit out Civil War in the comics, meditating.
There is still hope that Captain America: Civil War leaves Marvel’s cinematic Universe feeling more expansive, instead of less.
