Released in January 2016, Ill Boy Ill Girl is a story of an individualistic boy who is incapable of deciphering people’s names and labels due to an unknown disease that kills the victim by the time they reach twelve-years of age. The disease renders him in seeing people’s faces and names as scribbles, implying the fact that these humans have no individualism.
Japanese novelist and manga writer, Nisio Isin sees himself collaborating with mangaka Akatsuki Akira for the second time following their notable work together for Medaka Box.
Tackling existentialism in a dark way, the Shōnen drama illustrates the efforts of the unnamed main character who wishes to leave his mark in the world before he dies within a year by killing another victim, a girl, who has the same disease as he does.
Don’t be fooled by the fun styled artwork, the manga has a very dark undertone that runs really deep.
