6. Berserk (2016)
Finally after 19 years, the sequel to this classic anime is finally being adapted. When Berserk came out in 1997, it was a very different kind of anime compared to the other animes aired during that period. Dark, gritty, brooding and resplendent with graphic violence and sexual content, the anime was a little unsettling for the first time viewer. Though it has elements of mature, and somewhat dark visceral themes of brutal torture and sexual tension, it also explores themes of camaraderie, loyalty and friendship.
With its tight pacing and compelling storyline, this anime was the equivalent of the teenage angst while growing up in the nineties and noughties. In 2012, the film trilogy Berserk: The Golden Age Arc was released with the same storyline as the anime series but with an added subplot in the third film. For those who missed out on this classic, it’s best to start with the 1997 series, and then onward to the 2012 version, while waiting for Berserk 2106 to be released.
This sequel continues the story of Guts, after the events that transpired at the end of the anime and the film trilogy – as the mercenary “Black Swordsman”, who was briefly introduced at the beginning of the first episode of the anime – in his quest for vengeance and retribution.
